Getting Off the Un-Fun Rollercoaster Called Other People’s Opinions

Reading Time: Two and a half mins

Have you seen the movie Us?
If you have then I bet you’ll never be able to listen to ‘I got five on it’ the same way ever again.
Thanks Jordan Peele.

The movie brought a new meaning to the word tethered and makes it all the more real when I think about how I am tethered to people’s opinions of me. And by people I mean particularly males. Might as well not beat around the bush.

I love male attention and I love compliments from males, feels like sun on my skin. I’m not saying this is a good thing by the way, I’m just saying it because its true.

But I’ve realised that I don’t love being tethered to them; to their opinions, whether real or assumed. Or to any human’s opinion for that matter. Because there’s so many of them and they could all be different. They can have me acting all here, there and everywhere. Why? Because I can NEVER be everybody’s definition of perfect, beautiful or the ‘right girl’. And to be honest, I shouldn’t have to - it was never my job and it isn’t yours either.

So, seatbelt unclipped

Shoulder restraint up

Slowly stand on your somewhat wobbly legs

Deep breath

One foot out the cart

Now the other

Walk along the metal platform

Down the stairs

Past the long queue

Keep going.

And one last question: if being someone’s else’s idea of a 10/10 isn’t our job, then what is?
